Tabata is a form of interval training. The tabata method consists of eight rounds of high intensity exercise with only ten seconds to recover in between each round. This method of training is very demanding and is not for the faint hearted. Although tabata can be performed with any exercise, it was developed in Japan in the 1990’s by a researcher called Izumi Tabata (1).

The tabata protocol consists of:

– 20 secs high intensity exercise + 10 secs rest = 8 rounds

– tabata timing is 20 secs x 8 exercises = 4 mins

* tabata warm up and cool down not included

The tabata training protocol consists of 6-8 tabatas with just two minutes in between tabatas. The tabatas are performed for 10 seconds high intensity followed by 20 seconds of rest tabata times – tabata training for beginners is not ideal.
