As a health care professional, I see plenty of good healthy habits in my patients, but not all of them can be termed as good habits. Habits can be learned or developed over time, but they cannot be instilled in our bodies overnight. I tend to be a big believer in “habit re-enforcement” theory and think that people can form good habits by using repetition and reinforcement.
Good Healthy Habits
Good habits are something that we are born with. We have all seen people who seem to be in a Zen state and doing absolutely nothing and what is it about those people that make them so calm? It seems to me that these people have a knack for being peaceful and quiet. What I mean by good healthy habits is someone who is neither too busy nor too busy to be bothered about things.
Are you too busy to notice the needs of other people around you? Do you find yourself in situations where you have to make decisions about other people, yet you don’t really want to? I think not.
Good healthy habits are born out of understanding your limits and learning to avoid unnecessary risks. What I mean by this is that we tend to “opt-out” of things that are stressful. We just don’t feel the need to go through those emotional situations anymore.
Avoid Procrastination
There is a very unhealthy habit that people develop called procrastination. Procrastination is where we simply don’t put off important things for later. Things that are important to us get neglected and we often find ourselves making excuses for not completing them. When this happens, people end up with little time to complete more important things.
Good healthy habits also include living a healthy lifestyle. It’s not all about eating right and exercising. If we eat poorly, don’t get enough sleep, or even neglect exercise, we will find ourselves falling into the unhealthy habit of being lazy. I say that because it is the sort of thing that we are born with and that most people simply take for granted.
Now, when we look at getting good healthy habits, it is not just about the habits themselves. I think it is useful to learn about how we learn new things. Learning is a process. The way that we learn and remember things is a process. That’s the reason why many of us find ourselves forgetting important facts, facts that once were quite readily available.
Learn How Your Brain Reacts To Stimuli
Learn as much as you can about how the mind works and how it learns. Learn how the brain reacts to certain stimuli. Learn about the kinds of learning that can be fun and exciting and learn how to use those areas to your advantage. If you know how the brain works, it is much easier to determine what your options are going to be when it comes to getting the things you want out of life.
If you can train your mind to be calm, then that means you will be able to think and feel better. Anxiety, stress, depression, are all caused by negative thoughts. Those negative thoughts can be turned around to your advantage by knowing what is happening in your mind and then deciding to do something about it.
Accept That People Won’t Be Able To Help You All The Time
Good healthy habits also mean that you should be less needy. Don’t expect people to do for you, or accept someone else’s help or advice. Instead, make it a point to contribute your own ideas and input, and to offer constructive criticism when needed.
All of us should be more appreciative of the gifts that we have and more willing to let others live with no constraints on their lives. We should also be willing to have some peace in our lives. We should be more tolerant of others and be more patient when people have not behaved appropriately.
Good healthy habits also involve allowing ourselves to be comfortable and to relax. Don’t get bogged down in the day to day problems that most of us encounter in our lives. Learn to enjoy life as a way of life and let life take its course.
